For the Cake:

  • 3 c all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c unsalted butter
  • 2 c sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract

For the Butter Sauce:

  • 1 c sugar
  • 1/4 c water
  • 1/2 c butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Powdered sugar, for topping

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease and flour a bundt pan. Set aside.

Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

For the cake,

Cream butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. With the mixer on medium speed, add the eggs 1 at a time. Add vanilla. Add buttermilk and flour mixture alternately to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

To make Butter Sauce:

In medium sauce pan on medium heat mix sugar, water and butter stirring until sugar is dissolved. Do not boil. Add vanilla.

Remove cake from oven. Poke holes in top and drizzle butter sauce over cake. Cool completely before removing from baking pan.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar just before serving or serve with whipped cream if desired.
